It is a machining process known for millennia. In its primary form, it appeared in the 13th century BC. Traces of the use of primitive lathes have been found in Egypt. A milestone in the development of rolling was the invention of the steam engine during the industrial revolution. Turning became a popular production method in the 19th century and its popularity continued to grow. The turning point was the development of the numerical system, which led to the evolution of the industry towards CNC lathes – CNC turning.
Turning is nothing more than a machining process that is chip processing. Its essence consists in cutting part of the material from metal or other primary product rotating around its own axis. The workpiece is fixed with special holders. The tool holder with the knife attached to it is responsible for the process of separating its layers. The latter is in a linear plane, which allows you to obtain the desired shape of the workpiece. Turning is used to create bodies of revolution – cylinders, spheres and cones. It gives them not only a specific shape, but also dimensions or surface structure, thanks to which it is widely used in various industries.
